WARNER

Story Line: A New York City restaurateur (Dangerfield) is in love with his singing waitress (Gurwitch). In a vain attempt to impress her, he travels to Italy to learn how to sing.

Bottom Line: Before any value judgments are made about this 2002 production, which apparently had a very limited theatrical release last fall, a fact that alone makes The 4th Tenor a worthy curio should be considered: When was the last time an 80-year-old comedian carried a film? In a role that could have been written for an actor a half-century younger, Dangerfield somehow succeeds, pulling off romantic scenes in which he's decades older than his love interest's father. These surreal touches make the modest but smoothly directed production strangely fascinating, thanks also in large part to a talented supporting cast. Of course, it's Dangerfield's Born Loser charisma that makes the film a delight for his fans, who will probably consider Tenor the crowning glory of an impressive career. --C.S. O'Brien
